It all started in March of 2007…It was festival season. Mother and daughter team or partners in crime Carmel and Sally would trek through the city and surrounding suburbs shopping for something a little different, only to find that everything looked somewhat the same. Sally would ponder the big question, “What am I going to do with my life?” Carmel enjoyed working as a property developer but was also ready to try something different. One day, Sally piped up and said “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a shop that catered to every mood?” Carmel (being the supportive mother she is) said “Just do it!! You can do anything you put your mind to!” And so, in a snap decision, Carmel and Sally decided to open their own groovy shop. In April of 2007, Karibu opened its doors at 105 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide .

When deciding on a name for the shop, Sally drew on her experience travelling through Africa , where ‘Karibu’ means ‘Welcome’ in Swahili. It’s very fitting as the focus is on ‘welcoming’ fresh and exciting labels and promoting local talent.

There’s no real theme at Karibu– anything goes! To Carmel and Sally, it’s all about freedom of spirit and helping people to establish their own unique style. Every individual is different, and how they dress should reflect that. The shop flaunts a quirky vibe that has sparked interest from people all over the country. Come and check out the unique and exclusive range of clothing and accessories…or just come for a chat :)
